National Apprenticeship Week: From Electrical Apprentice to Operations Director with adi Group
Tom’s journey at adi Group began 19 years ago when he joined as an Electrical Apprentice. Today, he is working as an Operations Director at adi Electrical, a role that reflects his hard work, dedication, and the solid foundation his apprenticeship with adi provided.
Choosing an Apprenticeship
After initially pursuing a Sports BTEC at college, Tom soon realised that classroom learning wasn’t the right fit for him. “I wanted to do something practical and earn while learning,” he recalls. An apprenticeship at adi Group offered the perfect combination of hands-on experience and personal development.
Starting as an apprentice with adi Group, Tom has progressed through various roles, including electrician, electrical supervisor, project engineer, and operations manager, before reaching his current position. “The apprenticeship gave me a solid foundation, especially in working with different people and managing projects,” Tom explains.
During his apprenticeship, Tom worked on multiple sites across the country, gaining exposure to different teams and challenges. “I was lucky to have many great mentors’’ he says. “They guided me through my career and personal life, teaching me invaluable lessons.”
Pivotal Career Moments
One standout moment for Tom came near the end of his apprenticeship. While working on a project in Liverpool, he was trusted with managing a large project, while still on his apprenticeship and at just 22 years old. “We were low on resources, and I was trusted with running the entire project,” he recalls. “That experience showed my manager I was capable, and it was a turning point for me.”
Advice for Current Apprentices
Tom’s advice to current apprentices is simple: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. That’s how you learn.” As someone who’s been in their shoes, Tom emphasises the importance of embracing every opportunity.
Encouraging Future Apprentices
Today Tom is also committed to mentoring our current apprentices at adi Group. He meets with them regularly, ensuring they feel supported. “I’ve been there myself. I’ve messed up and learned from it, and I want them to know they can relate to me and be inspired.” He also encourages apprentices to socialise and build connections.
To anyone considering an apprenticeship, especially in electrical, Tom says: “Take the chance and commit to it. With the right attitude, there’s no stopping you. There are so many opportunities out there.”
Tom’s story is a testament to where apprenticeships can take you. Through dedication, and a willingness to learn, Tom has built a thriving career with adi Group.
